IN ROCKFORD…. FIRST RESPONDERS HONORED THEIR OWN… LOST IN THE LINE OF DUTY. ((ERIC)) BUT THE DAY WAS ALSO ABOUT THE NEXT GENERATION… THAT WILL PICK UP THE MANTLE TO PROTECT THEIR FELLOW CITIZENS. DYLAN SROCKI WAS THERE. DYLAN… YOU MET A TEEN THAT’S READY TO FOLLOW IN HIS DAD’S FOOTSTEPS. ((DYLAN)) THAT’S RIGHT ERIC AND MIMI. MANY PEOPLE TALKED ABOUT BEING INSPIRED BY THE ACTIONS OF FIREFIGHTERS AND POLICE OFFICERS DURING THE ATTACKS. ((DYLAN)) FOR ONE LOCAL COLLEGE STUDENT… STUDYING TO BECOME A FIRST RESPONDER MEANS GOING INTO THE FAMILY BUSINESS. ALWAYS REMEMBER… NEVER FORGET. THESE WORDS ARE INSCRIBED ON THE WINNEBAGO COUNTY 9/11 EMERGENCY RESPONDERS MEMORIAL. ON THE 18TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEADLIEST TERRORIST ATTACK IN HISTORY… STATELINE LEADERS CAME TOGETHER TO REMEBER.. Mayor Tom McNamara (D), City of Rockford “While we remember September 11th as one of the darkest days of our history, we also must never forget that it was a day of incredible heroism, bravery, and sacrifice.” ANOTHER WAY TO HONOR THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES THAT DAY… IS TO AWARD A SCHOLARSHIP TO A ROCK VALLEY COLLEGE STUDENT… PURSUING A DEGREE IN A FIRE… POLICE… OR E-M-S PROGRAM. 18-YEAR OLD FIRE SCIENCE STUDENT JOSEPH KREIN IS THIS YEAR’S RECIPIENT. Joseph Krein, Scholarship Recipient “I hope to be one of those individuals one day, to protect and to serve.” KREIN WROTE A SPEECH ABOUT WHAT 9/11 MEANS TO HIM TO APPLY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP… AND READ PART OF IT ALOUD DURING THE CEREMONY. EVEN THOUGH HE WASN’T EVEN ONE YEAR OLD IN 2001… HIS FATHER, JIMMY, IS A CAPTAIN IN THE ROCKFORD FIRE DEPARTMENT… WHICH GIVES HIM A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE ON THE JOB. Joseph Krein, Scholarship Recipient “When I think of all the firemen who lost their lives that day, I can’t help but think about all the children who lost a parent that day. It is a reminder to me that my father’s job involves certain risks. My father is a big part of my life, and I can’t imagine what my life would be like if he were gone.” KREIN SAYS… HIS FATHER IS ONE OF HIS BEST TEACHERS. Joseph Krein, Scholarship Recipient “I have a great relationship with my father. He’s always been my… he was my basketball coach growing up, and now he’s kind of my coach in the fire department I guess you could say.” ((DYLAN)) YOU SAW A LITTLE BIT OF KREIN’S SPEECH
