2011 CSU Best Teacher Greg Dickinson Brings Passion for Scholarship Mixed with Fun to the Classroom

(bright orchestral music) – I love being in the classroom. And I think the Best Teacher Award for me is acknowledged that love that students are giving that love back. Why that bush exists and grass exists. So, I get a Best Teacher award,
which is an enormous honor. But the honor really is the daily, of being able to be with the students. And, of all of the things I could be doing in the world to stand up three days a week, or two days a week. And, have conversations with these people about what it
means to live a good life. I mean, it doesn’t get that
than that, I don’t think. Under that logic, under that logic. For me, it’s not just another job. I’ve had just another job lots of times. (laughs) This speaks more to who I really am, and the place I want to have in the world. – I nominated Greg Dickinson because he’s an extraordinary
teacher, who actually, genuinely cares about his students. Dr. Dickinson takes the time to explain things to his students. And, he’s one professor I will remember for the rest of my life for the
impact he’s made on my life. – [Greg] I think of the one things that CSU does a really spectacular job of, in my experience, is understanding that we have a responsibility
to our students, undergraduate and graduate students. And, to help them be as
successful as we can be. While, at the same time, the other part of our job is to produce scholarship. And, to enlarge the world’s knowledge about important things. We see those two things as inter-meshed. That my own life as a scholar, trying to write things and think carefully about things is absolutely connected to my life as a teacher. That I want my students to write things and think about things. It’s only fair if I’m asking them to write papers that
I should write papers. I’m asking them to ask hard questions, I should ask hard questions for the year. So, there’s a real powerful connection between the writing we do as teachers and the teaching we do as teachers. When I see my job as being a
little piece of helping folks, get really ready to be successful. And, I mean successful,
get a good job, make money. But, also, be good citizens. But, I think also having role models of people who are
passionate about their work. Who want to work hard, who
want to work carefully. But, who also have a
lot of fun doing that. I think that is also
important to them because I think they take that message
with them out into the world. That, maybe I can find something to do that’s important and it’s fun and that I can be passionate about.
