2015 The North Shore Community College Foundation Scholarship Awards Breakfast

At this time I get the great pleasure to introduce Natasha Oliveira our student
speaker Miss Oliveira will tell you about her
personal journey at North Shore community college and
how a Foundation Scholarship has been
extremely helpful to her and her journey, Natasha Good morning everyone I’m so honored to be speaking today at
this wonderful scholarship award breakfast. My name is Natasha Oliveira. I have been a student
at North Shore Community College for two years. I am majoring in health science and plan to
become an occupational therapist. I currently work as a support associate in the ICU at Salem Hospital. I get to interact with many sick patients and help make their stay a bit more pleasant.
I love my job because I learn so much and I get to make a small difference in
many people’s lives. I was raised by a single mom who was born in Portugal. She came to the United States when she
was 13 years old. I also have a younger brother who is 17
years old. I am the first person in my family to attend college, and it has been an amazing experience. Although my mother didn’t know a lot
about college, she was very supportive of my decision, and
was always there to help guide me. I know that getting my occupational
therapy degree will help both myself and my family
financially. I want to make my family proud and I
hope to help guide my brother as he prepares for college. When I heard of
North Shore Community College, I was so excited about all the
scholarships they had to offer. I couldn’t believe how much the school
was willing to help students financially. Coming from a family where my mother
raised two kids on her own, I knew it was my responsibility to get
as much help as I could. North Shore was my first
choice, I was accepted early and got to attend the
early acceptance dinner. When I first came to North Shore, I
received many scholarships including the John and Abigail Adams
scholarship Presidential Scholarship and Believe in
Lynn scholarship. These were the main reason I was
able to attend college. I would not have been able to come here
without them. When orientation came, I was nervous just like everyone else. But with the help of my amazing TRIO advisor and all the professors at North Shore,
my transition was smooth and very stress-free. Being a
part of the Presidential Scholars Program has not only helped me to get involved
in my school but has helped me to grow as a person. I was assigned a mentor who guided me in my
first year here. I’ve had the opportunity to participate
in many events including president Gentile’s Inauguration, Early Acceptance Dinners and open houses.
With the Presidential Scholars Program I have had the opportunity to research and
learn about local non-profit organizations and we are currently writing a grant
proposal for one of them. I have met so many amazing people who are all so willing to help students
achieve their academic goals. Being part of a group of very
different students and seeing them work together has taught me
that as one you are strong, but together we are
indestructible. This fall I will be transferring to Bay Path University to get my combined bachelor’s and
master’s degree in occupational therapy in three years. I know I couldn’t have done it without the
help of my amazing advisor and all the professors at North Shore. All of
my classes will transfer and I’m so excited to take on this new chapter in
my life. To anyone who is considering becoming a
donor to the scholarship program here at North Shore, know that you are not only helping a student like me become more successful, but you are helping families who
struggle every day become incredible. Whether it’s a single mom who needs a
better job to support her family, a high school senior who is struggling
to afford college, or a veteran who is transitioning to
civilian life, North Shore Community College has
everything that you need to succeed. Thank you to all who support and will continue to
donate to this incredible school. Every penny you give is helping a student become more successful. I also want to congratulate my fellow
scholarship recipients this morning and ask you to remember North Shore
Community College in the future. As an NSCC alum, you can give back! You could be the one sitting in the donor’s chair some day! Thank You. Now she’s a great example isn’t she? Of the wonderful experience that we
have here at North Shore Community College and the life transforming experience
