2016 Scholarships – Corning Community College

*Music Playing* When I found out I got the
award, I was very surprised… *Scene Change* I felt honestly shocked
and excited all at the same time… *Scene Change* We
weren’t expecting it, it was a complete surprise… *Scene Change* My mind was blown… *Scene Change* It was a huge
blessing -um- it was definitely unexpected… *Scene Change* I was just waking up with my
daughter and my wife was at work and I was in
disbelief… *Scene Change* I just rolled out of bed, checked
my phone and saw an email from CCC and I was kind of wondering like if it was just
some notification just about some random thing… *Scene Change* I was excited like I’ve looked
at it at first I’m like, “Oh a scholarship”
and then I looked through the actual email I got I’m like -wow- that’s a lot of money
I got, I’ve never seen a scholarship that much… *Scene Change* I told
my dad and he got excited and right then and there we texted and called like
all my family members letting them know about it…. *Scene Change* It’s
really overwhelming. I do admit that I
did start crying because it was just a relief, almost. *Scene Change* Forwarded the messages
straight to my mom and dad, I’m like holy cow look at that! *Scene Change* I put a lot of hard
work and effort into a lot of things so it was a nice to know it was feeling of
pride to know that that was being recognized and honored. *Scene Change* When I first
opened up the email, I didn’t believe it, I was like this must be a scam, but I
was really excited and I called my mom and she started crying because she was
so excited… *Scene Change* You know- I applied but didn’t
honestly expect to hear anything really, just kind of was a shot in the dark, but
it kind of was a sense of validation more than anything that you know- what
I’m doing here it’s right. *Scene Change* The Houghton
family is well known around in the Corning area and everybody knows Amry Houghton
Jr. I mean, he was a CEO and a U.S.
congressman, and to know that my name will be attached to that scholarship, it was
honoring, there’s no other way to describe it. *Scene Change* It was awesome I mean the
fact that you know people recognized me and recognized what I’m doing and said,
“Hey you know we’d like to help.” *Scene Change* To get
that scholarship was just kind of like -um- reassuring to me that all my hard
work that way into things wasn’t just you know, in vain or wasn’t for nothing,
and that people were noticing, so it just came as like a huge of
affirmation of everything I’ve been doing. *Scene Change* It kind of gives you a sense
of achievement and accomplishment really,
really builds you up. *Scene Change* It was really great,
it was a sigh of relief actually, -um- because I’ve been working all summer,
trying to earn enough money to really pay for college by myself so that I
didn’t have to rely on my parents as much. *Scene Change* My bill is much less and more
manageable for me and my parents to take care of. *Scene Change* It will help me big time with
financial needs because it’s a lot less stress on me and my family. *Scene Change* I play volleyball for Corning
which means that every day five days a week we
have practice, and then on the weekends we’re usually gone Saturday sometimes
Sunday at volleyball games, so it’s hard to work during the season, so having a
scholarship means that it’s a little bit less than I’ve had to spend, that I’ve
saved up over the summer. *Scene Change* It lets us breathe just a little
bit deeper and a little bit better knowing that I’m being
supported by the college and the community. *Scene Change* It’s encouraging me to
continue on pressing hard with whatever work I’m doing. *Scene Change* It puts motivation and me
to do even better. *Scene Change* Before finding out
that I had received the scholarship, I was worried about working enough hours
and saving enough money to be able to pay my tuition, and then after finding
out that i received the scholarship, it was a huge financial burden off my chest
just knowing that i wouldn’t have to worry so much about that. Now I can focus
on my schoolwork and that’s not something that’s in the back of my mind
all the time, and i’ll even be able to save for my four-year transfer school in
the future. *Scene Change* It means a lot to me to be
able to go on and get my BSN so that i can help others the way that I have been
helped and my family members have been helped. And it means a lot to me to be
able to put back into the system what I’ve gotten out, or even more. *Scene Change* After this
I plan to have my associates and my RN, and I
want to go on to get my Master’s degree in psychiatric nursing. *Scene Change* My plan is to
transfer to Alfred I guess, Alfred State, -um- and then continue on to a four-year
degree. *Scene Change* Right now I’m in the engineering
science program at CCC and I definitely want to transfer
onward to get my bachelor’s and master’s degree. *Scene Change* I would like to become a broadcast
journalist. *Scene Change* I am planning on going into
the nursing program here. *Scene Change* I’m looking at hopefully working
something in finance whether it’s accounting, going into
actual finance, or maybe economics. *Scene Change* In two years i’m going to get
through the program, have my RN, hopefully be able to
find a nice job right here locally in the area, in nursing, continue going to
school work on my bachelor’s and move up through my Master’s. *Scene Change* To receive this
scholarship, it really meant a lot. *Scene Change* Very
grateful for it. *Scene Change* It’s hard to express how
appreciative I am. *Scene Change* It was very
encouraging to me, personally, too which is great.*Scene Change* Donations to scholarships
*Scene Change* truly make a difference *Scene Change* Donations
