RESEARCH INSTITUTE, ALSO KNOWN AS TGen, IS HOSTING ITS
13th ANNUAL HELIO SCHOLARS INTERN PROGRAM. FORTY TO FIFTY STUDENTS FROM ALL
AROUND THE PHOENIX AREA HAVE THE PRIVILEGE TO FOCUS ON REAL-LIFE
RESEARCH PROJECTS MENTORED BY SOME OF THE
BEST TGen SCIENTISTS.>>THESE STUDENTS AREN’T DOING
PROJECTS THAT WE’RE GOING TO PUT IN THE TRASH BIN
WHEN THEY’RE GONE. THESE ARE THINGS THAT COULD HAVE
REAL IMPACT ON THE WORK THAT OUR LABS ARE DOING. TGen DOES WORK IN NEUROLOGICAL
DISEASE, CANCER, INFECTIOUS DISEASE, AND DIABETES, AND
STUDENTS WORK IN ALL OF THOSE AREAS.>>EACH INTERN IS ASSIGNED
A PROJECT. AND WHAT’S REALLY GREAT IS
WE’RE GIVEN THIS RESPONSIBILITY, BUT OUR PROJECTS CONTRIBUTE
TO MUCH MORE THAN JUST OUR INDIVIDUAL LAB.>>THE EXPERIENCE THAT INTERNS
HAVE HERE AT TGen HELPS THEM TO PREPARE FOR THE CAREERS IN THE
BIOMEDICAL PROFESSION. HERE AT TGen, STUDENTS ARE
FOCUSED ON PRECISION MEDICINE AND FOCUSED ON PATIENTS WHO
NEED THE MEDICINE THE MOST.>>WHAT I WAS DOING WAS
IDENTIFYING THE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF PROTEIN WITHIN A SAMPLE. SO A SAMPLE COULD BE FROM
A DIFFERENT PERSON. COULD ALSO BE FROM THE SAME
PERSON AT DIFFERENT TIME POINTS. AND SO BY IDENTIFYING HOW THESE
PROTEINS CHANGE THROUGHOUT TIME, WE’RE HOPING TO IDENTIFY
HOW THESE DRUGS WORK IN THE INDIVIDUAL.>>NOT ONLY DO THE STUDENTS HAVE
THE KNOWLEDGE TO WORK IN THIS RELATED FIELD, BUT THEY HAVE THE
PASSION AND DRIVE TO REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE.>>I’VE ALWAYS KNOWN THAT I LIKE
HELPING PEOPLE, SO THAT’S MY BIGGEST REASON FOR WANTING
TO BE A P.A. BUT I ALSO KNOW THAT I WANT TO
HELP DEVELOP NEW THERAPIES. SO THAT’S WHY I CHOSE BIOMEDICAL
ENGINEERING, BECAUSE THERE’S A VAST NUMBER OF DOORS THAT
I CAN POTENTIALLY OPEN ONCE I GRADUATE.>>HERE, ESMERALDA’S WORK
INVOLVES FINDING A CURE FOR A CONDITION CALLED SCCOHT,
WHICH IS A VERY RARE FORM OF OVARIAN CANCER.>>WHAT THE MACHINE IS CURRENTLY
DOING IS PLATING CELLS INTO THIS PLATE. THE PLATE ALREADY CONTAINS THE
COMPONENTS OF CRISPR, WHICH ARE CAS-9 AND sgRNA. CAS-9 IS — I CAN THINK OF IT AS
GENETIC SCISSORS, AND THE sgRNAs ARE JUST A GUIDE TO TELL THE
SCISSORS WHERE TO CUT, AND THEREFORE SUPPRESS THE GENES
BEING EXPRESSED. SO IF YOU LOOK AT THIS PLATE,
IT HAS MULTIPLE WELLS. IN EACH WELL, THERE IS GOING
TO BE A DIFFERENT GENE THAT IS SUPPRESSED.>>TGen IS A VITAL PART OF THE
DOWNTOWN PHOENIX MEDICAL COMMUNITY. HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK
WITH SCIENTISTS IS AN INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY FOR HELIO SCHOLARS.>>IT’S CRAZY TO THINK OF HOW
YOUNG I AM, TO BE ABLE TO GET MY HANDS ON THIS TYPE OF
TECHNOLOGY. I NEVER DREAMED I’D BE ABLE TO
DO THIS UNTIL GRADUATE SCHOOL OR GETTING MY MASTER’S.>>BEING ABLE TO BE EXPOSED TO
THIS EARLY IS REALLY IMPORTANT, JUST BECAUSE IT’S SUCH
A BROAD FIELD. WE’RE ABLE TO A, GAIN THE
EXPERIENCE THAT’S NECESSARY, AS WELL AS BE ABLE TO SEE
