Apply for DRES Scholarships – Marina Nakhla

So my name is Marina Nakhla. I am currently 24 years old. I was born with congenital
abnormalities which resulted in bilateral blood knee amputations
when I was 14 months old. Ever since then I’ve been wearing prosthetic legs. I received two scholarships from DRES.
The first one was a Jane Small Advocate for People with Disabilities Scholarship and the second
one was the Mr. and Mrs. Choksi Scholarship. So the DRES Scholarship was really helpful because I received it right before I graduated for my
Master’s Program from CSUN. I actually used the money to buy a laptop,
which I really needed for a doctoral program. I use it every day for my research,
my stats classes, and all my work. Applying for the scholarship not
only exposed me to how to get into writing about experiences that I’ve had,
but it also allowed me to be recognized as a Disability Advocate once I did move on throughout my professional and academic endeavors. I think it’s important for not only Students with Disabilities to apply, but for anyone who advocates
for disability issues to also apply. People can be recognized for the
advocacy work they do and not only that, just being recognized allows more and
more people to be aware of the resources. When I attended the awards event, I
learned about other disabilities and I learned about other work that people
were doing that I was not aware of prior because most of my work has been with amputees. It also allows the dissemination of what people do in everyday life, so not only is it- would it be restricted to their community, but
these awards events and being recognized for these awards allows the general
public to become more aware. Apply for DRES scholarships now at:
