Applying for Scholarships at SCCF

hi I’m Jackie Gentile, program officer
with the Steuben County Community Foundation. We’ve created this video to
guide you through the scholarship application process and to address any
questions you may have about applying The Steuben County Community Foundation
offers over 50 scholarships for a variety of majors. Applications are
available November 1st 2018 and close January 31st 2019 at 5:30 p.m. If after
watching the video you still have any questions, please feel free to contact me
here at the foundation. Thank you, and let’s get started. The first step is
to do a search by answering several questions that will match you to
scholarships that you may qualify for. You’ll go on to our website. Click on the
tab for scholarships and you’ll begin your search. From there you’ll go on like
I said to answer several questions in regards to your interests or your school
just a variety of questions that will match you to scholarships you can go
through this several times if you’d like to do matching or just the one time I
suggest that you do your research on our website and look up your
scholarships that you may want to apply for to make sure that you’re
matching as appropriately as possible examples of questions are activities
your intended major if you plan on attending an indiana college or
out-of-state college so once you’ve submitted your matching
questions you’ll come to the program search results dashboard here you’ll see
the scholarships you’ve matched to based on any of your responses to the matching
questions it is on this page that you’ll select the scholarships you want to
apply for by clicking on the box and also on this page you’ll be able to
click on the name of the scholarship to find out more about the scholarship
itself and its requirement click the green button on the bottom to save your
selected applications so once you’ve made your selections on the scholarships
that you want to apply for you’ll create an account for yourself you’ll need to
use an email address and I suggest that you use a personal email address and not
your school address email address you’ll set up a password that you’ll create and
then you’ll go ahead and submit and then you’ll click to complete the common
application on the applications overview and by doing that it will ask you much
more extensive information and just let you know that on the common application
you will all that information follows all of these scholarships that you will
be applying for so you’ll go on now to my applications and you’ll see that
you’ve selected applications to apply for and the first start is to start at
the common application. Again the common application is where you will put all of
your information your personal information your transcripts your school
information your future plans activities things of that nature this is where
you’re asked you’ll last folks your guidance counselor’s for your
transcripts and things like that so you’ll start by filling out just
personal information you’ll see that the questions from the matching are also
part of the common app so you’ll you’ll be answering those questions once again
you’ll fill out the information for traditional students which is high
school students non-traditional students there is a section there for you to fill
out a non-traditional student is considered one a student that is
currently in college or an adult that’s looking to go back to school
when you’re filling out about resources please be as accurate as possible those
are that is personal information that you would put in yourself Steuben County
Community Foundation does not ask for documentation on your finances that just
asked you to put that information in there for you so you’ll fill out your
academic history and you’ll put that information in there your high school
transcripts that’s all done electronically so you’ll need to get
your guidance officer’s email address they will get notification to load that
information for you make sure you’re touching base with them and that you’re
following their deadlines if their deadlines are different than ours you’ll
be able to track when the information is sent out you’ll be able to track when
the information comes back in so please be sure that you’re logging into your
account daily to to keep tabs on what’s going out and what’s coming back in
post-secondary education if you’ve attended Trine Middle College classes, IPFW or any other university that you
receive grades for you’ll need to contact that school and ask them to get
you an email address so that you can obtain those transcripts. If for some
reason they do not all post those transcripts for you if you’re able to
obtain them yourself and bring them in to the Community Foundation will be
happy to load them onto your account for you. Next are the future plans.
You’ll fill that section out in regards to where you are going to be attending
school what your major is going to be
extracurricular activities you’ll be able to check as many of the
extracurricular activities that you’ve participated over your high school or
career though next they’ll be sections there’ll be three sections that you’ll
be able to fill out to elaborate more on that information so if you’ve gone and
over the course of your high school years have participated in a variety of
extracurricular activities you’ll pick three that you want to expand on and
fill the information out on this section there’s a section here after the high
school activities in regards to 4h participation if you have participated
in the 4-h program you’ll need to obtain your records and load them if you have
any issues unloading them please bring them in to the Community Foundation and
we’ll be happy to do that for you to your account volunteer experience is a
lot like the high school activities you’ll be able to list three of those as
well the next section of work experience you’ll be able to list three work
experience activities as well so you know this isn’t an area where you’ll
need to ask folks for information to load for you this is where you’ll be
filling it in yourself the next section is recommendations in this section you
will be sending out a request to someone who will be asked to answer a few simple
questions about you this requests to answer question does not allow for a
letter to be submitted so please be sure to let the person who you are asking to
complete this section know that they are only being asked a few simple questions
also in this section you will be able to track
all requests sent out and returned our next section is additional documents
this is an area where you’ll be able to self load a file any kind of information
that you feel you want to put into this part of the application that will put
your application at a better level some past applicants have put in resumes
they’ve put in extra letters of recommendation as someone has taken the
time to write for them they’ve put in just different information that they
felt would be beneficial to their application the next section is the
disclaimer section it that’s a question where you sign off stating that the
application if you’re submitting the information that you provided is true
you’ll notice on the right-hand side of the application there’s a couple of
areas that are still left in red those are areas of the application that are
still in need of information so until that information is is provided you
won’t will not be able to submit your application once you’ve completed and
submitted your common application you’ll go back to the my application dashboard
click on the application link you want to complete you’ll see that all of your
information from the common application followed over to the scholarship you
saved to your account most scholarship applications contain
required references and all have an essay if you’ve selected an application
that contains a donor required reference be sure that you read and understand who
you should be asking for a reference from you’ll also be able to track your
request and submitted letters the next section is your essay when completing
the essay be sure that you are answering the question it is a good idea to have
someone else read your response before submitting be sure to check your grammar
and your spelling as well if you’ve received the references you requested
and completed your essay go ahead and submit your application remember that
each scholarship application needs to be submitted individually due
to unique requirements here are a few really good tips for you to keep in mind
when completing your application these tips are also on our
website as always please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions
or feel free to come into the foundation be sure to follow us on Instagram and
Twitter for updates and tips about scholarships and different things going
