Boston University Scholarship Story – Fiona Kearns (CFA’17)

I totally started
out as an actor, and I really thought that’s what I
really, really wanted to do. But what I love about
what I get to do now is that I’m always in process. The design and production
degree is basically anything that happens in
theater that isn’t acting. Things like designing:
lighting design, scenic design, prop design. So it’s all aspects, both
creative and functional, of that backstage work. The School of Theatre’s
artistic mission is very much founded on
expanding the role of theater in the world. That’s something
that we’re trying to do as the next generation
of theater artists at BU, is think about, “How can you
tell stories about women? How can you tell stories
about people of color? How can you tell all of
these different stories?” So the big change
that’s happening is that we’re selling
Boston University Theatre, and we’re getting a brand
new facility across town on Main Campus. What I think is going
to be really good about it, is that it’s
going to allow our program to have a bigger role in
the University as a whole. The alumni network is amazing. I think BU grads don’t have any
problem making a recommendation for someone, even if
they don’t know them, because they trust that
heavily in the professionalism of the program. Honestly, I wouldn’t be here if
it wasn’t for my scholarship. I have four little
siblings, and I applied to BU never thinking
I would able to come. So my scholarship
is like, a gift that I’m grateful
for all the time, because the gift of giving
a person the ability to tell their story is
one that is unmatchable. And I think art
is how we do that. It’s how one individual voice
gets to come out from the crowd and tell a story. I know that doing theatre was
the first time I ever felt like my voice mattered. There’s nothing else
in the world that does that the way that
art does, and I think that is an invaluable thing. [MUSIC]
