My name is Maryam and I’m from Cabramatta High School. I came from Syria 3 years ago. I came with 7 other family members, which are my parents and my young siblings because I am the oldest. It was not safe to be in Syria anymore, it was just war and there was no future for us there. One of the biggest challenges was that I could not speak English. When I first came to Australia it was just like a new country, a new culture and a new language. I have always had doubts about myself and my abilities. Receiving this scholarship was like someone screaming at me and saying: ‘yes Maryam you can do this. ” All my teachers were very helpful. If I had any problem I could always go and talk to them. I really look up to my Principal, I’ve never seen some kind who can take control of the whole school. My favourite thing about school is that it is very multicultural. When I first came I was really afraid of how I would get along with others. But 96% of our students speak a language other than English. There are a lot of skills that they share, I share mine. It’s just like an exchange of knowledge and skills which will really help you in the future.
