2019 Grimsley High graduate Sara Moody paid one last visit to her alma mater with her
parents before heading off to college this fall. Sara is an EC student as well as the 8th person
in her family to graduate from this historic high school. Her achievements over the last four years
have now paid off with a scholarship. Sara is the first recipient of the Coach Cedric
Cokely scholarship. Coach Cokely has been a special education
assistant at Grimsley for more than 30 years now and is himself a graduate of the school. “It’s supposed to be for a student who’s
been served by the special education department. It can be on any level and that’s the beautiful
part about it. If you feel like you’ve had to have your
education altered, assisted in any way by special ed services, whether it be something
simple like a 504 or more complicated like in a separate class, and you have goals for
something post-high school, we could possibly help you.” Sara learned she’d been chosen for the scholarship
at senior awards day last spring. “I was really excited, especially when they
said it’s the first time the scholarship has ever been given out. I was like, ‘cause I just remember at senior
awards, ‘and the Coach Cokely scholarship goes to Sara Moody!’ I’m like ‘what? What? Me? Awesome!” She says she hopes more students will now
know about this scholarship opportunity and apply for it. “Definitely check your school’s website
and talk with your counselors to find scholarships that are geared toward you and not just like
the generic scholarships that are – anyone can get and just the scholarships that people
probably just skip over.” “I hope other high schools will consider,
as part of the alumni association, offering scholarships to students that have been served
by special education. That’s our goal. That’s my goal with this.” Sara will take her scholarship and talents
to Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina. This has been a GCS Newsbreak
