The reason this scholarship is so important is that we want the best students to come to Queen’s. It really helped me go into university feeling more confident and feeling proud of what I had accomplished. It did help financially – every bit counts. During high school I learned about this scholarship – this admission scholarship – and I made that something I wanted to achieve. It was a goal for me. I grew up struggling with finance. I am from a single-parent home so having this opportunity is amazing. Asking alumni to give to scholarships is one of the most fun jobs the dean has because alumni respond very well to that. They can remember what it is like to be students. They can remember what it is like to not have much money and they want to see the next generation succeed so that Canada has its next generation of leaders. Alumni responded so brilliantly, we raised more than $1 million in less than a year. It’s an amazing, unifying project I think because we all understand the value of getting the best students to Queen’s and that is fundamentally what these scholarships are about.
