Education Abroad: A Year in Toulouse, France

(gentle music) – Coming into college I knew
that I wanted to study French because I’ve been taking it for a while. And the program that
Dickinson offered in Toulouse sounded really interesting. It wasn’t Paris. And our host families
met us at the airport and so right off the bat there
was a connection made there. The 24/7 immersion just
right away I could feel my progress within the first month. I wanted to become
proficient in the language. Since I stayed for the
whole year I was eligible for the DELF French exam
which is recognized by France and it’s a certificate of
your language proficiency. And I did well and so I think
that is a big confidence boost because it shows that staying for the year was definitely worth it. And I felt like I didn’t have
to kind of rehearse my lines before going to dinner
with my host family. It just became very natural. I’m a double major so part
of my concern was that all of my credits wouldn’t
maybe transfer over. But Dickinson makes it really easy. There’s five universities in
Toulouse that you choose from, ranging from the Toulouse
School of Economics to the Catholic Institute
which is more liberal arts. So even staying the whole year in France I was able to get all
my anthropology major requirements even missing a whole year at Dickinson in Carlisle, I’m still on track to graduate on time and I have all of my major
requirements finished. (gentle music)
