Engaged Learning, Teaching and Scholarship Conference at NIU

[music] Renique Kersh: Northern Illinois University’s faculty and staff have a long history of providing
high impact learning experiences for students. The Engaged Learning, Teaching and Scholarship
Conference gives us a chance to celebrate the many ways that faculty and staff support
engagement across the campus. Mahesh Subramony: As an exemplar, I believe
what people want to learn is what are the different techniques that they use in class
in order to engage students. A good professor is somebody who walks into
the classroom fully willing to share themselves with the students, and I believe that’s
what causes engagement. In this conference, I’d like to focus on
what are some ways to generate presence without making this to be a list of techniques. Madelyn Anderson: Participants at the ELTS
Conference will benefit by reaffirming and recognizing the outstanding work that’s being done
at NIU. In addition, it reinvigorates us as we return
to the classroom. Brian Sandberg: One of the ways that we try
to bring engagement is through research. Getting undergraduate students involved
in research here on campus, and also out in the communities. We hope that participants in the ELTS Conference
will take away some new ideas about practices for engaging with the community. Natalie Young: There will be a number of interesting
presentations at the conference, and one is mine, and it’s going to be about the Open
Doors Program here in the College of Education. This program allows our juniors and seniors
in the Early Childhood Program high poverty, high minority schools outside of Chicago. Rena Costsones: This conference is an opportunity
for people to learn about what’s happening in classrooms with students actually going
out into the community, and engaging in meaningful ways with the region. Renique Kersh: We encourage all faculty and
staff, and our colleagues across the region, to join us in this celebration.
