The Hansen scholarship program commencing
in 2020 will offer the most wonderful educational empowerment for 20 students each year.
This program is born of the philanthropy of the Hansen Littles, their 30 million dollar
gift is not only the largest gift for the benefit of students in the history of the
University of Melbourne, and it’s a long history. It’s also one that will provide absolutely
unparalleled opportunities for outstanding students, whose personal circumstances might
otherwise deny them the great opportunity to study. I was fortunate enough to be the first member of my family to attend university. I would
not have been able to go to university unless my education had been supported in this kind
of way. I have been a massive beneficiary of that transformative event in my life. Transforming
lives is what universities do. I envisaged this program as having three distinct
phases. The first being to reach down into the schools and identify those students with
potential and to inspire them to aim high. The second phase is to shepherd them through
their degree on full scholarship, with all of the academic and pastoral support required.
Housed as a distinct cohort with the strong sense of belonging and purpose. And the last,
but extremely important part is to offer them post-graduate opportunities and to imbue them
with the sense of ambition. That with hard work, it is within their grasp to come and
to thrive at the University of Melbourne. We guarantee to do the rest. Thank you.
