Innovating Education at UToledo

The University of Toledo is preparing
graduates for careers in a broad range of fields with specialized intense
training that can’t be found anywhere else. As one of the most comprehensive
public research universities in the country, UToledo offers one-of-a-kind degree programs in human donation science,
disability studies and other high demand career fields. We’re innovating education
and launching the next generation of leaders. The University of Toledo is the
only university in the country to offer an undergraduate program in cosmetic
science and formulation design where students master the science, art and
business of cosmetic. Dr. Gabriela Baki wrote the book on the subject. She is the
director of the program and authored the first cosmetic science textbook for
undergraduates. “So in this program, students not only learn the knowledge
that other students might be learning at other schools, they also have the
hands-on experience – skills you don’t you can’t really learn them in a classroom
setting you have to get into the lab you have to gain that you have to acquire
that skill so that’s a huge advantage that our students have. The program’s
cross-disciplinary approach is launching careers beyond chemistry and formulation –
the scientific curriculum and lab work are complemented by training in
business and arts helping to place versatile graduates at some of the
world’s leading cosmetic and personal care product companies. “Even if you’re
working in a lab, all day every day, you have to communicate with the marketing
team and the sales team and it’s a big team effort so you need to understand
where they’re coming from as well as them understanding where you’re coming
from so I think that it’s really important that we learn the business
classes as well because again it just makes us the better well-rounded
scientist.” “The goal is to sell the products of
students have to understand the business side. They will have to communicate the
sales and marketing people so having that understanding, basic terminology, is
very important, and if you think of the power of shampoo, it has to look good and
smell good so people would use it so the artsy components also comes into the
picture, and so it’s great that at the University of Toledo we can offer all of
that and students don’t have to go outside to get that skillset.” UToledo graduates
are in demand because their skills are sharpened by innovative
academic programs that are unique to their disciplines. We are providing tools
today for tomorrow’s leaders.
