Inside the Classroom With Robots | LSU Eunice

This is computer information technology
CSC 1015 and its fundamentals of programming and I teach them Python and
a little bit of robotics. I got an endowed professorship from the from the
foundation and I was given a substantial amount of money to spend and I had
asked my students what they wanted and since it’s their classroom in this
they’re learning and they had asked for robots they had asked for a 3D printer
and I feel that it’s going to just enhance their learning where they’re
learning more than just one thing they’re expanding their minds in other
areas. Her name’s Linda. We name them. I’ve
learned how to drag-and-drop and how to make a program like on startup and then
you can get them to where they can touch each other on collision and they can do
a completely different program. You get them to sing stuff, talk, change colors.
Really a lot of things that you can do with this program. With Linda she has
across her screen she said go bengals, sound like tiger, strobe purple and
gold and then she’s done some backflips, jumped around in circles. Really anything. I learned how to make it do disco dances I was actually curious as to how it
worked and turns out it works by a yeah it’s spinning magnets that uh keep it
stabilized whenever it’s on. All right see how it’s moving by itself that’s the
gyroscope acting and I was actually really I was curious about it and
confused on how it worked and that’s basically would have been messing around
with. Oh so far I’ve been playing around which
is like moving it around and whatnot and edited one of the pre-made animations
that it has in here like for example the little hearts…the purple hearts I mean it’s the cutest thing ever. When they first learn it we get into the
robots and it’s a drag-and-drop. Drag and drop is pre-made variables
are pre-made constants and that the student can drag and drop into making an
entire program and then they run it and they see what it happens to it. They
can take parts out and add parts in. Kind of getting my feet wet and how the
programming works like understanding the language of it it mean is just like like
it’s just like learning someone else’s language when you’re talking to a human
being but instead you’re working with a computer. Once they’re comfortable with
that in about a month we’re going to start learning a little bit of
JavaScript which is the other side of learning what goes on with the robot. So
they’re going to do basically three programming languages in this class.
