International Experience Scholarship – Saif El Husseini

Daniella: Hi Saif. Saif: Hi, nice to meet
you. D: Nice to meet you too. Thanks for taking the time to talk with me. S: Thank you so
much for your time as well.
D: So I understand you got a chance to go abroad to Cambridge
specifically.
S: Yes, I did. Yes, I did. D: Can you tell me about, first of all, your
background and then.. S: Sure. So I studied through the Department of Civil Engineering. My Bachelor’s degree is in civil engineering, engineering management and entrepreneurship. D: Which you’ve just wrapped up, no? S: Yes, I just recently graduated as well, and I’ll
be attending my convocation this June. D: Congratulations.
S: Thank you very much. D: Well, can you tell me about where you went and what the opportunity was about? S: Sure.
So, I went to the University of Cambridge and it was about business and entrepreneurship
summer program to the Cambridge Judge Business School. I found out about the opportunity
by looking through multiple universities for a summer business program and I came across
Cambridge, and thought to apply. I have the privilege of saying I got admitted to the
program, as well as I have the privilege thanks to the International Experience Scholarship to attend, and say that I have attended this program, yes. D: So that’s no small feat.
S: Yes, definitely. D: Can you tell me just what the key takeaways were from it? S: Yes,
so I’m gonna go a little philosophical here, but it’s something I definitely learned on
a personal level, and I definitely want to share this with all and everyone. So my first
key takeaway is – to master your inner strength and inner self and with that you can go anywhere.
So that was what the opportunity for me at Cambridge was. My second takeaway is – to
master the way you think and the way you learn and apply it. So that was something that was
happening on a continuous basis through the program and it was pushing me and always pushing
me in a better sense to apply and learn as I go. My last takeaway, and this is the most
crucial one, is – to take risks. So that is – take a risk in order to do better, and if
not, that’s something towards learning, learning towards, yes. D: Oh my god. S: Yeah. (chuckles) D: This might be a bit of an obvious question, but how will this help you down the road in your future studies or your future career? S: So, the University of Cambridge actually
opened up a lot of opportunities for me. It kind of broadened my perspective on a lot
of things and it really changed and opened my mind on a lot of opportunities and the
way I think about a lot of things. So this opportunity really broadened my perspective
and broadened my opportunities in all fields. As I’m interested in companies as well as
starting a company myself in the future, as well as investments, and business, and entrepreneurship,
and intrapreneurship within an existing company, yeah.
D: That sounds like barely the tip of
the iceberg, but I just want to thank you for taking the time to talk with me and answering
my questions. S: Yes, of course. Yeah, thank you so much for your time. Need funding for an opportunity abroad? Head to our Scholarships page at engineering.uOttawa.ca .
