Jake Chung | 2019 Distinguished Alumni Awards

I know that is an Iowa Hawkeye alum,
we’re born to lead. We’re also born to give back. That’s what Hawkeye’s
continue to do. My name is Jake Chung, and I graduated from the University of
Iowa in 1996. My time at the University of Iowa helped really create the foundation of who I am today. I learned about grit.
I learned about excellence in education. Making a positive difference in the lives of students, and really understanding the educational philosophies behind how students are
able to learn based on the things I learned from a college of education. I’m really proud of the impact that I’ve had to work with other individuals to make a
real positive impact on students, particularly some of the most
marginalized students in our school systems. It’s really gratifying to find
opportunities to make connections with our students and really know that the
impact that we’re making on our students today will have a lifelong impact on
those particular students. I’m incredibly honored and humbled to receive the
Distinguished Alumni Award for the Area of Service. I know that there are
thousands of other recipients that could have easily received this award and it
means a lot to me. Countless alums continue to give back to the University, so to me, this award is an opportunity to be shared by countless others of
individuals who have helped me to make a positive difference in the lives of some
of the most marginalized students that we serve. Find ways to continue to give
back to the University of Iowa. It’s an amazing feeling to continue to do that. And finally,
Show your Iowa pride everywhere. We know that there are
Hawkeyes throughout the country, and as an example, my license plate is “U IOWA”
Go Hawks!
