I’m a student teacher at Stuyvesant and I teach 10th grade. Many of these students are almost invisible. I’ve been working so hard to become an individual for them. When Jessie Singh’s family could not accept her career aspirations, she was helped by compassionate teachers. Jessie, a scholarship student at Teachers College, has found more of them at TC. As a high school student, after being placed in foster care I had nowhere to turn to. I hated school. Like, what does that matter to me. Some my professors here, Adele and Yolanda and Pat, when we’re working in groups, they’ll just come up to you, hand on your shoulder, how are you today? Are you doing good? Being able to say, hey I acknowledge that you are here and I acknowledge that you are an individual. It means so much. I see it in my classroom every day. It’s much more than teaching a subject. It’s about teaching humanity.
