My name is Jessica Herndon I’m currently pursuing
a bachelor’s of business administration and marketing. I currently live in Coral Springs,
Florida. I’m previously from Dayton, Ohio. Right now I’m enlisted in the United States
Air force reserve. I’m an E4, which is a senior airman. I love it, it’s wonderful and it’s
given me many opportunities. When I first came to FAU, there wasn’t a particular place
for me to go and talk about my benefits and how to get adjusted from the military life
to civilian life. Um, and a lot of other veterans go through that. So having a veteran resource
center is probably the first step in creating a place for veterans to go. It’s a great initiative
to be a part of to make the campus more military friendly.
I’m a recipient of the Melissa Neier Memorial Fund Scholarship. My father got into a car
accident when he was 18 and hit by a drunk driver and almost died. He had traumatic brain
injuries and that has been a very hard thing to deal with my entire life. And when I read
the requirements for this scholarship I knew that I needed to apply for it. The scholarship
has made my life easier in the fact that I’m able to study without worry. I’m able to put
more of my time into FAU and with my veteran owl’s I felt like before I was doing too many
things and wearing too many hats and after I received this scholarship it was a blessing.
It really helped me through that hard time. When I found out that I got the scholarship
I received an email. I just started crying out of happiness. I hugged everyone in my
office and they’re like , “Why are you crying”, I’m just so happy this is wonderful. I felt
secure and I felt like I had that help that I was really needing and asking for. Your
gift made a difference in my life.
