Ethan: How do I read this kanji? The left one is “moushimasu”, and the right one is “iu” and “ao”…? Yui: Oh, that’s “shinsei.” It means “apply.” I see, you use it when you apply for a visa. Why is it “shinsei-sho” instead of “moushikomi-sho”? Hmmm… both mean “apply”, but I guess “shinsei” implies “ask for permission” or “request.” So you use “shinsei” when you ask for permission, and “moushikomu” can be used when you don’t need someone’s permission.
