MA TESOL (Distance Learning) – Melissa Shelsby

My name is Melissa and I’m doing the TESOL Masters with the University of Birmingham, I’m teaching English in Korea but I’m originally from America. I think what’s special about this course is that I’m able to study and teach at the same time so what I enjoy doing is learning from my Masters courses and applying it to my teaching and applying my teaching to my Masters degree so it’s been really wonderful for me. The course is delivered online through Canvas so you have access to readings through the online program and also you have access to the library as well, on the Birmingham library, so it gives you access to academic readings and that kind of thing so a lot of its online and then through your assignments you do writing, you submit it via email, so everything is online. My favorite thing about the course so far is that you can study alone if you want to. If you really enjoy studying by yourself you can do just that and get a lot of work done and study quite hard independently, but if you want to have other people you can go out and you can join. In South Korea there’s the orientation group, we also have the summer session in South Korea, and also in Birmingham there’s a summer session too, which I’ve joined this year so I really enjoy that process of independent study and studying with others. The MA will help me to advance my career because I’m currently teaching in English in South Korea so I have experience teaching in this context but getting this Masters degree will help me a lot with getting future jobs in South Korea, so for that particular context this is really excellent for me. If you’re not motivated I would recommend doing a course on campus which University of Birmingham also has but you need to be very motivated if you want to do this course in terms of other device, time management is very important as well and kind of forgiving yourself if you haven’t done everything perfectly, you haven’t read everything, just being okay with the fact that you’re probably working or doing something else and studying and just being okay with doing your best.
