Madalyn – 2017 Scholarship Recipient

My name is Madalyn Horn. I received the Rotary scholarship through
Auburn. And I’m studying for my Associate’s of Business
direct transfer agreement. I have a small family, and being able to get
money through school and get the support means that I don’t have to spend so much time away
from my son while going to school, and working a job at the same time. So, it’s amazing. Being a young mom, I was 16 at the time, comes
with a lot of challenges. And everyone told us that we wouldn’t amount
to anything, you know, we’d drop out of high school, and getting this scholarship really
like–not only did it help money-wise, but it also gave you that little pick-me-up and
said: you earned this, you’re doing good, you don’t need to drop out, you know, you’re
doing the right thing for your family. All of my teachers were really amazing, but
especially Jamie Harmon. She’s my biology teacher, and she wrote my
recommendation letter for the scholarship and words cannot express how much she helped
me. The further you get along, the more expensive
it gets, and the harder it seems to continue, because grades and just the way it hits you–there
is that money aspect but then there’s just that support, and it’s just saying, hey, we
chose you, you’ve worked really hard, and we see that and appreciate it, and I’ve sure
every student here could agree that that means the world to them.
