Meet the Charles Butt Scholars

I cried. It’s probably, like, top… five best moments of my life. Once I told my mom she was, like, Lily I’m super proud of you, like estoy muy orgullosa de ti. She couldn’t be any happier. Nobody in my family has ever gone to college, so they were always, just, really excited for me. So, it was really just a great moment for all of us. So, it feels like it was a winning moment not just for me, but for my whole family. What an accomplishment… I think I was more proud that someone else could, like, see how passionate about teaching I was then like just myself. Whenever I received a scholarship, that told me that, the Raise Your Hand Texas Foundation wants to invest in my future, but at the same time, they’re investing in the future of the students that I will be teaching. There’s always scholarships, or fellowships, or internships for engineers … for math majors, but there’s never really a focus on teaching. I see flyers. I see posters. And I I’m like, I’m part of that. I finally realized that, if I went into the medical field, I was never gonna truly be happy because I was always gonna be thinking, “What if I could be in a classroom instead?” Teaching is a profession that creates all other professions. if I could have students, like, remember one thing, it would be, “They are a masterpiece.” I just want them to remember that they’re loved and that they matter in the world. One teacher can have an impact on thousands of people without even knowing it. I know my career is going to make a huge impact in the future of Texas communities.
