Murray State’s Presidential Scholarship Day

Murray State welcomed high school students
to the Curris Center to participate in Honor’s Day where they got a feel for Murray State’s
campus as well as interview for one of Murray State’s top scholarships. Murray State rolled
out the red carpet for top high school students who are considering attending Murray State.
These high school seniors are all honors students as they have at least a 28 A-C-T score and
a cumulative 3.7 G-P-A. Honors day gives these potential Racers the chance to learn more
about honor programs on campus as well as interviewing for the Murray State Presidential
Fellowship. The presidential fellowship as it is called
now started out as the presidential scholarship and it was designed to recognize our top scholars
it is a leadership scholarship so they are looking at well rounded student and certainly
the students come from all over it is open to any student any new freshman to apply for
and so they go through the application process they have to submit some additional documentation
they have to get recommendations submit some other curriculum rigor because they do score
them on leadership activities academic rigor the students once they get here and they are
selected for the presidential fellowship they’ll end up doing research as well so they are
looking for a strong academic student but who’s also going to be a leader on campus.Murray
State’s Honors Day is the first step into achieving this prestigious fellowship, as
the application process is very thorough. Students will go through multiple interviews,
on-demand writing, as well as having their applications reviewed by committees.
Students have the opportunity to start applying for the scholarship in October when our scholarship
application system opens our deadline is January 15 so they have to actually apply specifically
for the presidential fellowship and we invite them to come to today’s event which is basically
considered as round one and that’s where they go through the competition the essay the group
interview and then after today our committees will complete scoring them and then they’ll
select a smaller group to invited back to a second around which will be on March 9th
it’s a Monday and at that point the students that attend that day will go through just
an individual interview so a little more one-on-one in depth at that point
Students were able to meet with President Bob Davies during the red carpet ceremony.
Additionally, each had a photo taken with Dr. Davies in which they could submit to their
hometown newspaper for recognition of their achievements at Honors Day.
It was a lot of fun to really have you know all be it a brief 30 seconds with each of
the students coming in but just to kind of here where they are from and what brought
them here to Murray State what they hope to get out of it again a brief a very quick conversation
but in those conversation that true honesty about the quality of education that they are
expecting there excitement about being here at Murray State University and they’re desire
part of the Racer family and in our population. Having events like Honor’s Day is very important
because it gives students the opportunity to see if Murray State is a great fit. Our mission as a university is to educate
the people in our region so that means everybody who can actually you know get into a university
we’re committed to educating all of them so we have some students who are barely qualified
for a university education and then we have students who literally go to any university
in the world so the point of the Honors program is really to provide an extra level of achievement
for those top students who are capable of doing it well one of the things that we are
obviously trying to do is recruit the best and brightest students to Murray State University
because that enhances all of our efforts it enhances all our academic programs it enhances
all of student co-cirrcular programs it helps us become a better university.
