Rural Reconnect Scholarship – University of South Australia

The John and Johan Hoj scholarships, I established in order for young kids or older kids to come to the city and study at UniSA especially where they need financial support to make that transition just a little bit easier. – I received my scholarship in my first year, 2010. – I won the scholarship last year. – I’m from Blythe, which is just out of Clare. – I’m from a small country town called Geranium, in the Malley. – I’m from Horsham in Victoria. – I’m from Nildottie. – I’m from Lameroo. – I’m from the Riverlands. – When I got the call that I’d got the scholarship, I was sitting in a bakery in Clare, in the Bakehouse and I got an unknown number come up on my phone and I was like, “What’s going on here?” so I answered and yeah, I got told that I was a successful applicant and I was like “Oh my gosh!” – Well, coming from a small country town and having to give up a summer job to come down here, I knew that funds were going to be pretty low, and making the relocation funds were going to be needed for rent and food and just general everyday living, so the scholarship was definitely going to help me out with that. – If I could get it, it would be a great opportunity for me to get that extra financial push in moving to Adelaide. – There’s not too many things out to help rural kids and this was definitely a big opportunity for us rural kids to get some help. – My first year of study, I’ve really enjoyed it. It was just… I really enjoyed what we got to learn and had a great time. There’s some great people in the course. – I’m looking to do honours somewhere within the Division of Pharmacy and Medical Science. – I’m going to return to the country, because I’ve got another scholarship so I’m bound to hopefully go to a larger country town. – I’d really like to do hand therapy or something like that. – When I finish, I’m still not sure what I want to do which area, whether I’ll go back rural or stay in the city, I haven’t quite decided. I guess that’s the beauty of it, you don’t have to know just yet, you can just enjoy the study as you go. – We have come across some unbeleivably fantastic students who are not only academically very gifted but are clearly very gifted members of their community in terms of sporting and helping people out. They are just excellent students. – I hope that they get to express their full potential and contribute to society in a way that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to do. That’s my real hope. – I’d like to say to Professor Hoj thank you so much for this scholarship, it’s definitely helped out a lot and I honestly don’t know what I would have done without it. So thank you. – Thank you for the opportunity and just helping me get down to Adelaide and helping me along with my studies. – It’s just made the transition a lot easier, so I’d like to say thank you so much for that. – Thank you so much for this opportunity, I know it’s been a massive relief for my family and for myself. – It just makes a huge difference in the first year, we can focus on our study without having to work and it’s just, it makes the transition so much easier, so thank you. – I would like to thank Professor Hoj so much for his generosity, it’s just incredible and it’s been such a good start to my university and tertiary education it’s been a huge help and I’d just like to thank him very, very much. – Thank you Professor Hoj for making this possible. You’ve given me a great opportunity and I’m always very appreciative. – My gratitude just is endless I know I’ve thanked you a million times already but I really appreciate it, and thank you again for giving me the best start to uni that I possibly could have.

  1. Hi Mary, this particular scholarship is for students from rural Australia, however we have many other scholarships available for international students as well. Search our website (unisa.edu.au) for "International Scholarships"
