(JL) THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE AT THE STATION NIGHTCLUB DURING THE FIRE WERE IN THEIR 20s, 30s, AND 40s. MANY OF THEM WERE JUST STARTING TO CREATE FAMILIES OF THEIR OWN. SO A SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM WAS CREATED TO HELP THEIR CHILDREN PAY FOR HIGHER EDUCATION. T’S CALLED THE “STATION NIGHTCLUB FIRE CHILDREN’S SCHOLARSHIP FUND”. IT’S AWARDED ANNUALLY BY THE RHODE ISLAND FOUNDATION. ONLY THE CHILDREN OF SURVIVORS AND VICTIMS OF THE FIRE ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE ASSISTANCE. APPLICANTS MUST BE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES AND YOUNGER THAN 31 YEARS OLD WHEN THEY FIRST APPLY. THE MONEY HELPS PAY FOR COLLEGE COURSES OR CAREER EDUCATION. RECIPIENTS RECEIVE A MAXIMUM OF 4 THOUSAND DOLLARS PER ACADEMIC YEAR UP TO FOUR YEARS WITH A LIFETIME CAP OF 16 THOUSAND DOLLARS. AT THIS POINT ORGANIZERS BELIEVE THERE ARE ABOUT 70 YOUNG PEOPLE STILL ELIGIBLE FOR THESE SCHOLARSHIPS. TO DATE 225 THOUSAND DOLLARS HAS BEEN AWARDED TO 40 CHILDREN.
