Scholarship Recipient Josh Hubbard, Electrical Line Worker

[ Music ]>>My name is Josh Hubbard and I’m in the
Electrical Lineworker program at DCTC. I worked for 5 years at Mesabi Nugget
Iron Plant in northern Minnesota and when they laid us all off, we were
given the opportunity to go back to school and get retrained and I chose DCTC as one of the
3 Electrical Lineworker programs in the state. [inaudible] the DCTC program, the
hands-on aspect of it, I really enjoy. You’re given a chance to actually work
and do things that you’re going to do in your professional career but you’re
doing them in a controlled environment with supervision that allows you to make
mistakes but you learn from your mistakes. And given the option to take evening classes
and only go Monday through Friday or Monday through Thursday really helps me with my
family life since my wife still lives and works in [in audible] and gives me a
chance to go home 3 days a week. I was awarded $1,000 scholarship from Xcel
Energy and this helps me in a major way because I’m traveling to go to school and
that costs money that I’m not making while I’m in school and allows me to focus
more on my academics and not worry so much about how I’m paying for it. After I graduate from DCTC, I’d like to go
to work somewhere in the area that I live in and hopefully work for a
co-op and go from there. [ Music ]
