Scholarship Recipient Tammy Manitowabi

(upbeat music) Hi, Aanii. My name is Tammy Manitowabi. My spirit name is Magizi Kwe, which means “Eagle Woman”. I am from Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve of the three confederacies, Odawa, Potowatami and Ojibwe nations. Here at Centennial college, I am enrolled in the child and youth care program. It’s a three year program. I’ve been working with children and youth since I was 16. I was a high-risk youth, myself. My aunt told me to turn my negativity into something positive. It wasn’t until I moved home, where I’d applied at the youth center, and I made the decision that I would go back to school and get that piece of paper. It was very hard for me to kinda grasp the idea of learning from books. But I’m learning a lot and the family of having everybody there that’s also passionate about working with children and youth is empowering in itself. You know, the love and sincerity of actually helping somebody, that’s what it’s all about. (upbeat music)
