Scholarship Recipient’s Story – Cooper

after high school I went to the military
and I was in the military for a year while I was there I got the basic
training done and I got AIT done I left about a year after and got an honorable
discharge so the next step for me I knew immediately that I wanted to go to
school I wanted to finish my education and I had to take a while to think about
what I wanted to do when I got here so I did some research and I came to the
conclusion that I wanted to be a lawyer when I first started I was at the Akron
campus and I was there for about a year and then I found out that there was an
Honors Program that I could join so I joined the Honors Program and those
honors courses are transferring over as honors credit to the four-year institution
I’m going to the GAR foundation on our scholarship
it really helped me out particularly when I first started at Stark State I
was living in a small apartment in West Akron I was only working part time I
didn’t have a car so I had to wake up in the morning and I had to walk to school
and the school was about an hour and a half walk and did that every morning studied at school all day and I walked back
finances were tight the scholarship alleviated books for me
I didn’t have to pay for my books this semester or last semester and it just
kind of closed that gap but took you know a breather off when it came to that
I had the privilege of being able to apply to some really nice schools after
getting my degree here at Stark State and I knew I wanted to go finish up get
a four-year degree so the schools that I applied to Ohio State University which I
got accepted into I had the opportunity to apply to Howard University which is
in DC I got accepted there and then lastly and probably the best one I got
accepted into Columbia University in New York City it was nice to be able to read
a yes from an Ivy League school I came to the conclusion that I wanted to go to
Ohio State because they accept all of my credits they’re even looking at my
honors credits to get those matriculated into their Honors Program my bachelor’s degree in political science and I’m hoping to concentrate and stay
in the economy so then after that I will go into law school and that’ll be the
long-term goal to practice as a corporate attorney
