Scholarship Stories: Academic Excellence

[ Music ]>>When I was younger, my sister
and I would write scenarios for movies and then we would
see them be like in a movie and we’d get really
upset about it, and we were like we could have
written this so much better. I’m a creative writing major and
I really want to write a book of short stories and
also write for TV shows.>>All throughout school,
math was my strong point, so I think it really
only made sense for me to become an engineer. I’m a plastics engineering
technology major, and in the future I
would like to work for a large medical
plastics corporation such as Bayer, making
medical parts.>>I had one of those teachers who was just way too
excited about what they do. He would show us demonstrations
and, one of the labs that we did, the only
way we could pass it is if we shot the film
canisters that we were using through the ceiling tiles. After that, I just knew
that I was going to go to school for chemistry. I’m a chemistry major
with a physics minor, and after I graduate, I’m
hoping to find a job working with analytical chemistry
in the Erie area.>>I got an e-mail that
said I had a scholarship and my sister was like, we have
to wake them up and tell them. So we ran upstairs and we woke
my parents up and we were like, hey, I got a scholarship,
just, by the way. You can go back to sleep. We’ll talk about
it in the morning.>>So my parents texted
me one day saying, “Hey, you received a scholarship.” I was just pleasantly surprised. Like, I can’t believe,
you know, I was chosen.>>After work the one
day, my dad called me and said you’re never going to believe what came
in the mail today. And at first, he told me
about it, I was like, no way. That couldn’t have happened. And then he’s like, “Yeah,
you know, it really happened.” And I was overjoyed. I couldn’t believe it.>>Having these scholarships
has really helped me personally. It’s helped me be more outgoing. It’s really great to be able to
do what I want with my summers. I still work, but I work for
a non-profit organization. So, I get to do that every
summer, now that I don’t have to worry about making a
certain amount of money.>>Receiving the
scholarship motivates me to do better in school.>>If the donor were here, I would like to say
thank you so much. You’ve really helped me
shape my college experience.>>If the donor were here, I would tell them
I’m very thankful for receiving the scholarship. I’m honored they chose me
for my academic success and the scholarship has
tremendously helped me out financially.>>If the donor were present, I would like to personally
thank them. They have allowed me, really, to
focus a lot more on my academics and less about planning
out a budget and how to pay for everything. It’s really going to
free up a lot of time, allowing me to achieve the
grades that I want to and get out of college what I want to.>>When a student receives
a scholarship based on their academic
performance, first of all, you are rewarding them for the
hard work that they’ve put in and the studying to
get to this point. The second part of it is, what
you’re really allowing them to do is have some
flexibility in figuring out what they want to study. Penn State Behrend
is very strong in undergraduate research. It’s one of the hallmarks
of the college. And by having these
scholarships, more students can work with
faculty members on research and then go off and pursue their
interests after they graduate, whether it’s graduate school or
whether they go off to industry. Having scholarships
really does help us to attract great
students who perform well. Then they go on and they have
great careers afterwards. [ Music ]
