Secondary Education at UVM

Secondary Education at UVM

– The spring of my freshman year I took one education course and it just kind of clicked. Burlington is a really fun city. There’s a lot of great food. I was just blown away
by the natural beauty. The Adirondacks right across the lake. What I like to do is just
be outside all the time. The campus itself I really liked because everything was walkable. What it really came down to was all the field experience that
I knew that I would have. The fact that I would have the
student teaching experience inside a classroom by the
time I graduate undergrad was kind of the deal maker for me. By far the student teaching
experience is the most rewarding piece. It’s kind of the pinnacle
of the undergrad experience. When you’re full time in a school you start to feel how real it is because that’s when you
actually are with the student everyday. You’re building relationships. You’re working with other teachers. You’re working with the students
and are really part of it. South Burlington High
School has been amazing. The resources available are incredible. The things that they’re
doing are so cutting edge. South Burlington is moving
towards proficiencies so we’re able to grade students on more of what they’re capable of. It’s been great having
technology in the classroom and the resources for para educators, English language specialists has made this an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to
work as a homework tutor in the team program at
the King Street Center in downtown Burlington. I was also a homework
tutor at the O’Brien Center working with students from
the Winooski school district. The idea and ability to
have those other flavors of field work and kind of
see other sides of education beyond just classroom teaching and also getting out in the
community was really rewarding. My UVM experience has
undoubtedly in my mind made me ready for the future in terms of providing all sorts of
different field work giving me real experiences
as to what it’s like to work day to day in this field.
