TJC Scholarships: Fulfilling Dreams

TJC Scholarships: Fulfilling Dreams

My goal in life is to really make a difference
in the world, even if it’s just in one individual’s life. When I was little I wanted to be a teacher,
a fashion designer, and then I eventually want to open a boy’s and girl’s club, I also
wanted to own an amusement park. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a doctor. My mom was a nurse, and she’d always encourage
me to go into nursing. I didn’t think I had what it took to be a
nurse. Eventually, as I grew older, I realized that
I think I want to go into business. I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur, I
want to start my own business and be able to create jobs for other people. I’m from Mexico. I lived there for seven years and I know what
it is to live without any medical help so I want to start my own clinic in poor countries. I love patient care. I worked as an EMT for a while and fell in
love with patients and people and going to bed at night thinking that I maybe did something good. My dad, when I was in seventh grade, he got
diagnosed with lupus. Before he got sick, I actually had a really
good job, we kinda never worried about money. When he got sick and wasn’t able to work, things
changed. I raised three kids. When my children were small, it was my priority. It’s nice to be able to devote all of this
time and my mindset to school. I’m single, it’s all on me. There’s been some challenges, there’s been
some hurdles. I was applying for every scholarship. I applied to TJC and when I got the Floyd
Wagstaff Presidential Scholarship, it was the best thing. I received this scholarship. I’m not a traditional student, I decided to
go back to school, and I believe they implemented that scholarship for people like that, that
are trying to further their education a little bit later in life than would have normally done. Having this scholarship, it really gives me
the opportunity to focus more on my classes instead of worrying about how am I going to
pay for college. Well, when I got the scholarship, I was really happy,
cause it showed me that I didn’t give up. Most people would have given up, but they
gave me this money for a reason. I can do it. I received the Robert M. Rogers Presidential
Scholarship and it covered me through my first two years. I’m very grateful for my start in school at
TJC. I have three children and I am happily married. I am a private practice OB GYN here in Tyler. I love the ability to educate people about
their health and help give them options to help take care of themselves. So when my husband and I sit down and think
about what to do with our resources, I can think of no greater use out of it than education
at any level. I can think of no greater return on my investment
than the gift of education. Kids that didn’t have the dream of college
before, now college is something that is on the table. It’s something they’re talking about at home,
amongst their families, and they finally have an opportunity to dream. To dream of a different life, dream of a career
choice that maybe they didn’t think was possible. It’s allowing them the opportunity that through
hard work and dedication, they can pursue that dream and make that dream a reality. I’m definitely not taking it for granted. I’m loving every second, I’m trying to take
advantage of every second, make every connection, network with anybody I can. I’m using this time here to prepare me for
my future. Never in a million years did I anticipate
being the recipient of that scholarship, so to get it, I’m quite honored. Thank you. Thank you for choosing me, first of all. I don’t know why, but thank you. I would just thank them for giving me the
opportunity, for sacrificing their own money to help somebody who they didn’t personally
know go to school. If I had one chance to say something to my
scholarship donor I would say thank you. Thank you for believing in students, thank
you for believing in the power of education. How does Doctor Tranquilino sound to you? Amazing, it sounds, I like it. I love it.
