Undergraduate research scholarship scheme

Undergraduate research scholarship scheme

My personal tutor told me about
the fact that the scheme runs and then the email just came into
my inbox and that told me when to apply and I apply it basically because I want
to go on to do further research, Masters and PhD hopefully and I thought it would be a good
opportunity to get an insight into research work. I heard about it through the
departmental email there were a couple going on in the
department and I applies for the one I was
most interested in. We got a departement email and
my friends were talking about and there was one that sort of the period
of history that I’m interested in, I applied without really expecting
to hear anything back but… It was The Bomb at the British Museum.
In the twenties there was a bomb planted in the India room and it turned out to be
a hoax orchestrated by the newspapers. I think it’s gonna fit into
Dr Houlbrook wider work on media excess. I was in a project with
Professor Andrew Sanders on the topic of assisted dying, it was them assessing the current
legislation proposal and Lord Falconer’s bill and contrasting that with the existing
legislation in Europe and in America and seeing where the safeguards were and what
the motivations behind were and then applying that comparative study to
Professor Andrew Sanders theory and helping him with his thesis. I worked on Scribes of the Simeon Manuscript
with Professor Wendy Scase so looking at 14th Century
manuscript and trying to make some conclusions about the scribes
that wrote it and how it is produced. I mainly I think developed a better understanding of what it means
to do academic research so on a more realistic level about
this sort of medio task that go into it but also developed skills working with
primary sources so I have to go down to the British Library and work
with manuscript itself. I don’t do a dissertation so I wouldn’t have the opportunity to do
an extended period of research so that gave me the opportunity,
I’ve never dealt with that much material before so it was good
to have some practice. I gain on professional and personal level, in the professional level I was when I’m looking to apply for
postgraduate courses I can draw out on my experiences to have a better understanding of what it
entails to do a Masters or a PhD and on the personal
level going to final year I’ve gained a lot out of
the ability to stretch arguments and formulate an essays which it happen to write my dissertation. Absolutely, I feel like I gained a lot out of it and it gave me the insight into further
studies which I wouldn’t have gained anywhere else, I’m now applying for
a PhD and it’s because of this project that I know that that’s the path I wanna go down. Definitely, it is something you usually do for free
so getting paid is pretty sweet, it’s a good experience to apply for a Masters as well,
a nice thing to have on your application. I think it’s a really good scheme
and to be paid for doing research which helps me
in the long run is a fantastic opportunity which doesn’t
really get offered by many places.
