FREEDOM ROUNDTABLE. WGAL NEWS 8’S KATELYN SMITH IS
LIVE WITH WHAT SECRETARY DEVOS
HAD TO SAY.>>HOUSE SPEAKER MIKE TURZAI
INVITED THE SPEAKER TO THAT
HE WANTED HER TO SEE AN
ALTERNATIVE TO A PUBLIC SCHOOL. TODAY’S FORUM WAS ALL ABOUT
SCHOOL CHOIC
THE TOUR STARTED WITH THE
SECRETARY VISITING AND IN SOME
CASES READING TO STUDENTS. SHE EVENTUALLY EVEN HEARD FROM
ONE OF THE STUDENT’S MOTHER’S
WHO IS HAPPY TO HAVE THE
OPPORTUNITY TO SEND HER KIDS TO
HARRISBURG CATHOLIC. DURING THE ROUNDTABLE, THE
SECRETARY AND OTHER
REPRESENTATIVES AND PRIVATE
SCHOOL BACKERS, TALKED ABOUT A
PROPOSAL TO START A FEDERAL
SCHOLARSHIP THAT INDIVIDUALS AND CORPORATIONS COULD DONATE TO TO
SUPPORT SCHOOL CHOICE.>>IF WE CAN HELP RAISE FROM
VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS 5
BILLION ANNUALLY, AND IT’S
DISTRIBUTED ACROSS THE 50
STATES, I THINK IT WILL DO A
SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT TOWARD GETTING KIDS MORE GREAT
OPPORTUNITIES.>>BUT WE’LL CONTINUE TO SEND
THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY T
HARRISBURG SCHOOL DISTRICT WITH
THE STATE TAX DOLLARS WHICH MEAN
THAT ON A PER PUPIL BASIS,
PRESUMING THAT STUDENTS TAKE THE SCHOLARSHIPS, THE AVERAGE PER
PUPIL DOLLAR AMOUNT WILL
ACTUALLY GO UP HIGHER FOR THE
HARRISBURG SCHOOL DISTRICT.>>IN JUNE, THE GOVERNOR VETOED
A BILL THAT WOULD HAVE INCREASED
FUNDING FOR SCHOOL CHOICE,
BECAUSE HE DIDN’T FEEL THE PLAN
HAS A SOLID FUNDING SOURCE. HE WANTS TO FOCUS ON MAKIN
