Women & Philanthropy

Honestly I always felt an education was
out of my reach I felt like I’m damaged goods, you don’t
know where I’ve been, and it’s you can do it but not me it’s out of my reach I knew I needed to make a better life
for myself and my kids helping my daughter with her homework I didn’t do so well and I ended up getting
her a couple problems wrong on her math homework and I realized you know what I need to go
back to school and I need to do something different The hardest thing, I’ll paddle out in
waves I have no business being in at all but man to take that english placement
test horrified me It’s a fight to go back to school I started taking one class at El Camino
and here I am in the English program and I haven’t written an essay in like 20 years
so that was really challenging for me and then financially it was really hard
for me to juggle work and my kids and being a mom and just trying to pay the
bills and everything and I got to a point where I just like…
even with the grants and loans I was taking out I just still couldn’t make ends meet I decided let me look at scholarships and see what I can do and just try I had to do a personal
interview with six women They were asking me all different questions about
what it was like to be a reentry student and how it is to be a single mom going back to
school and how do I juggle my time to hear these questions and to know that these
women were interested in my story and what I had to go through to get
where I am today was overwhelming and I walked away from that interview thinking
even if I don’t get the scholarship this moment is amazing to know that these
women care I got an email saying I was going to be awarded the
scholarship I was in awe I was shocked and really excited and it felt really good to know that ok I’m going to be
able to pay down some of my bills and I’m going to be ale to pay my rent this month and be able to focus on school and spending some more time with my kids If other people believe in me and have faith in me
I can’t quit how can I quit when all these people have stood by me and helped me and
put so much into this I can’t quit and I’m going to stay in school and reach my goal and graduate and have a B.A. in Rec Therapy Thank you so much to the Women & Philanthropy for my scholarship and the gift that it gave to me just knowing that you care and the impact that it’s made in my life to be able to keep at school to make it through school. Thank you.
